One of the key focal points of the Intensive Club Experience is understanding that academics and the social environment are two of the most important factors when making a decision that will shape the next 40 years of your life. While lacrosse should be factored in, it may not always be the driving force.
Logan Beck came to our overnight camps in California before attending the ICE program for 3 years straight from 2015-2017, and took this advice to heart. While he did not end up playing NCAA lacrosse at the Air Force Academy, his time at ICE still helped guide him to the skies and the United States Armed Forces.
What is your favorite Trilogy Lacrosse memory?
Logan Beck: My first Trilogy experience was at the Trilogy overnight camp in California. It was my first time staying away from home to focus on getting better at lacrosse, and it was an eye-opening experience for me as I learned so much over only a few days. There were so many different coaches that all had their own specialty, so the training was specialized and tailored. After playing lacrosse all day, we had time to relax and have fun with games and activities like movies and raffles.
How did the Intensive Club Experience (ICE) impact your recruiting journey?
LB: After practicing and competing with the team for a week, we got the opportunity to tour different colleges with lacrosse programs in all divisions, from D1 to club. Being able to see different colleges in person helped me decide what was important to me when considering a school’s opportunities, majors, class sizes, and sports programs. We had one-on-one conversations with the coaches, giving us a better idea of what the day in the life of a student-athlete is like in different divisions. This experience gave me a complete view of what student life looks like at different types of colleges with and without sports. Even though I did not play lacrosse in college, I thought that it was an extremely useful trip to learn about what to look for in a school.
Why did you choose to go to the Air Force Academy after high school?
LB: I knew that I wanted to join the military, but it wasn’t until high school that I heard about the service academies. On the Trilogy ICE college tours we got to see the Naval Academy, which gave me a good look at what a military academy is like. The things that interested me most were the unique opportunities presented to you in college, the small class sizes, a guaranteed job directly after graduation, and no tuition since you pay in years of service. I ultimately decided on the Air Force Academy because it was flying oriented, with several programs that introduce cadets to aviation through gliders, powered aircraft, and skydiving.
When did you decide to become a pilot?
LB: I would always go to airshows in my hometown with my parents, so I knew that I wanted to fly from a young age. As I grew up, being a military pilot became my goal since you get to do things that you are not able to do in the civilian world. I love aviation and I fly whenever I can in civilian planes and gliders, but the military flying has given me lots of opportunities and memories that I never would have experienced otherwise. Every day, I am reminded how lucky I am that I get to fly for my job and I am immensely grateful for all of the amazing opportunities that I have experienced so far.
You graduated from the Air Force Academy in 2022, so what are you doing now and what are your plans for the future?
LB: I am currently an instructor pilot at Vance Air Force Base in Oklahoma teaching in the T-38, which is the Air Force’s twin engine jet trainer used for pilots going to fighter and bomber platforms. After the initial phase of pilot training, a few students per class move on to the T-38, where they learn how to perform aerobatics such as loops and barrel rolls, fly 500 feet above the ground at 400 miles per hour, and maneuver in a formation of up to four planes as close as 3 feet apart. I will be stationed in Oklahoma for another 3 years as an instructor, and following that I will be training into a new aircraft. While I am not sure what plane I will fly next, I am hoping to fly a fighter aircraft if given the opportunity.
